Gene Transfer Improves Diabetes-linked Heart Ailment

May 08, 2019 0 Comments

Researchers with the VA San Diego Healthcare System and the University of California San Diego have shown that a gene transfer technique can combat heart dysfunction caused by diabetes. Working with mice, the researchers showed that a single injection to promote the expression of the hormone urocortin 2 (UCn2) increased left ventricle function and improved how the body processed glucose. The study could lead to new clinical treatments for diabetes-related left ventricle dysfunction, they say. ...

Genetically modified (GM) crops enable growers to manage weeds more effectively while sustainably increasing crop productivity to grow more food on less land. Some GM soybeans express CP4 EPSPS, a protein which allows the crop to be tolerant to the herbicide glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup® Brand Herbicides). Herbicide tolerant (HT) crops allow farmers to safely control weeds by spraying herbicides on a crop, according to label directions, without killing the crop. ...

Researchers compared outcomes in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) after exposing them to either B-lymphocyte depletion or placebo. Inspired by earlier studies that suggested the potential of B-lymphocyte depletion in this setting, they chose rituximab as their mechanism of delivery. Researchers compared outcomes in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) after exposing them to either B-lymphocyte depletion or placebo. Ins...

http://orcid.org/0000-0001-8627-1167 http://orcid.org/0000-0002-1260-7710 Class switch recombination (CSR) requires activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) to trigger DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) at the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) in B cells. Joining of AID-dependent DSBs within IGH facilitate CSR and effective humoral immunity, but ligation to DSBs in non-IGH chromosomes leads to chromosomal translocat...
